The Brewing Guide. How to make a V60 coffee

As usual, in each issue of the newspaper we will present a method of coffee preparation. This time we will focus on V60 coffee. This preparation method is appreciated because it is simple, clean and affordable. Coffee extracted using the V60 method has a delicate and sophisticated taste, with clearer aromas, the method being perfect if you want to discover the more subtle nuances of specialty coffee.

The V60 coffee maker has a unique cone shape, which allows the coffee to retain all its flavors at the time of extraction. The circular movement of the water ensures an even and efficient extraction every time and at the same time allows different experiences of the same coffee, depending on the speed of the water flow and the movement chosen.

For best results, carefully follow the ingredient requirements and steps listed below.

You need:

  1. Coffee maker V60
  2. Paper filters for V60
  3. Kettle – preferably with a narrow pouring tube
  4. TIMER
  5. Weighing
  6. Coffee grinder
  7. Cup
  8. 18 g coffee beans
  9. 300 mL of water

The optimal coffee grind for the V60 is a texture similar to table salt. Once you have the necessary things at hand, the preparation of coffee is carried out in the following way:

  1. Heat the water. Bring the water to a boil, then let it cool for a minute. The temperature we want is 90-95 degrees Celsius.

2. Prepare the coffee maker. Fold the paper filter over on the creased edge and place it inside the V60 coffee maker. Place the coffee pot on top of the cup.

3. Moisten the filter. Pour the hot water inside the paper filter for 5 seconds until it is wet. This step is important because it helps the filter stick to the coffee maker and eliminates the papery taste. Before you go any further, empty the water from the cup with which you moistened the filter.

4. Grind the coffee beans. The oils that give coffee its inviting flavors evaporate very quickly after the beans have been ground. For this reason, we recommend that you strictly grind the amount of coffee you are going to prepare. In our case, using the scale, measure 18 g of coffee beans, then grind them to a medium to fine texture (like salt).

5. Prepare the coffee maker. Place the ground coffee inside the V60 coffee maker and gently shake it back and forth to settle the coffee. Make a small indentation (1 cm) in the middle of the coffee bed using your index finger.

6. Pre-extraction of coffee. Place the cup on the scale along with the V60 coffee maker and start the timer. Slowly pour in a small amount of water (30 g), enough to moisten the coffee evenly. The warm water causes the coffee to release certain gases, which lead to the expansion of the coffee bed, the formation of air bubbles on the surface and the release of aromas. Let the water sit for 30 seconds.

7. Continue coffee extraction. Begin pouring water continuously in small circles around the center of the coffee maker. Try to keep the water level in the coffee maker constant, below the edge of the coffee maker, and avoid pouring water around the ends of the paper filter. Stop the process when your timer reads 2 minutes or the scale reaches 300g.

8. Savor! It allows all the water in the coffee maker to drain into the cup. The final extraction time should be somewhere around 2 and a half minutes. Throw away the paper filter and enjoy your coffee straight from the cup!
